Richmond PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk
Hip fracture and GERD. We often write how everything in the body is linked. Here is another scenario. GERD or reflux symptoms drive sufferers to seek relief. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) come to the rescue for many Richmond reflux sufferers. Sadly, these PPIs may cause issues elsewhere, specifically the hip for which the risk of fracture is higher, despite the fact that they help with GERD. Your Richmond chiropractor closely monitors our patients who report hip pain, particularly if they are taking PPIs, as many time chiropractic treatment does alleviate hip pain.
PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly recommended and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is elevated in PPI users. Whether users take a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is greater while those on a high dose were at even higher risk for hip fracture. Researchers warn that doctors and patients must know this in order to be cautious in recommending PPI use for a long period of time and be cautious in understanding what the appropriate usage of PPIs is so that they do not take it without a full understanding of the need for such use. (1) Researchers in the latest study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk minced no words: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They begin their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is contestable which inspired them to study if this were true. They found participants who were 40 years of age and over and had been prescribed PPIs for at least 90 days. They then checked on any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. Their study revealed that fractures developed oftentimes in PPI users than in those who didn't use PPI and that fracture risk associated with PPI use increased with duration of use. (2) Avoiding hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.
