August 2020 Healthy News from Johnson Chiropractic: Pain Reducers: Spinal Manipulation and Ginger
A recent study offers the most up-to-date recommendations on managing and relieving chronic musculoskeletal pain. The goal? Get care to be more consistent, encourage collaborative care among various healthcare providers, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. Johnson Chiropractic knows our Richmond chiropractic patients would like that! Guidelines for musculoskeletal conditions - low back pain, neck pain, tension headache, osteoarthritis (hip and knee) and fibromyalgia – involved acupuncture, spinal manipulation/mobilization, modalities (low level laser, electrical current), exercise (yoga), mind-body practices (meditation and cognitive therapy), lifestyle changes (diet, no smoking), and referral for co-management as needed. (1) These recommendations reiterate and improve prior such studies. One group of researchers offered reassurance, advice, education, spinal manipulation along with exercise, myofascial therapy or usual medical care when beneficial for chronic low back pain. (2) Another research group reviewed complementary medicine for musculoskeletal conditions and stated that good/moderate quality evidence supported the use of spinal manipulation/mobilization, yoga, and acupuncture for chronic low back pain and neck pain. (3) Spinal manipulation is a well-practiced chiropractic skill while the other suggestions are all available within the personalized Richmond chiropractic treatment plan. Let’s work on your chronic musculoskeletal pain!

Richmond CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH:
Richmond PAIN REDUCER: GINGER!
Ginger adds zest to food and to pain-relieving efforts! Pain-lowering effects of ginger come from its anti-oxidant potential and its capacity to inhibit prostaglandins and pain-related nociceptor activity. Ginger’s pain-reducing effect holds promise and is safe by all the latest studies. (4) Ginger taken orally has been safely done in several studies. One particular study reported that osteoarthritis patients’ pain dropped significantly as did disability. (5) Such a simple herb, ginger, holds such zesty promise!
