Now, active care is big in healthcare today. You, the back pain patient, must be actively involved in your health and in your recovery when your health slips. Insurance insists on treatment plans that move patients from passive, “we’ll do this for you”-type care to active, “you do this for yourself”-type care as quickly as possible. That’s not all bad. We all know that the more you do for yourself, the more in control of your life you’ll feel, the better and sooner you will be.
A recent article reports that sick leave due to lower back pain is an avoidance behavior. (1) If the job requires lifting or the pain is severe or radiates into the leg, you may really not want to work. You worry that your back pain or leg pain may increase. You may think that if you don’t go to work, you can’t hurt yourself. That logic may well be faulty as such avoidance often perpetuates the pain, not reduce it.
So take control today. Move to the extent you can. Johnson Chiropractic is confident that if you move an inch today, you’ll move a foot soon. Start with the simplest motions like controlled exercise. Johnson Chiropractic generally recommends just three simple lower back exercises for lower back pain patients to start with. We say only do them as many times and as much as you can stand. No more. You’ll find that you can do more than you know. But don’t do any of them until we talk!
